INTRODUCTION

OVERVIEW

New developments in 'smart mobility' follow each other in rapid succession. Today, cars park themselves and are connected to each other (connected cars). Tomorrow’s cars and houses will be connected via smartphone (Internet of Things, continuous connectivity). And the day after tomorrow (between 2018 and 2022) the cars will be able to drive till destination independently, via the motorway and in large parts of the city.

Talking Traffic offers a new generation of travel information that allows people to be well informed before leaving and to look further during the journey than through the windshield. This way one can anticipate what is going on behind the next corner, just after the next exit and shortly before the final destination. Regions, companies and IenM (Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment) under the name Talking Traffic make agreements about the information they now make available, enrich and then offer to road users: from the maximum speed, information about incidents and roadworks to a free parking space near one’s destination.

In Talking Traffic; road users, signs next to and above the road, traffic centers and traffic lights - everything communicates with each other. This ensures up-to-date travel information tailored to the individual final destination, which is valuable for every road user; not only before departure but also during the trip, people receive location information and get advice to travel as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Complementing the efforts of Talking Traffic, many other such projects also have braced the modern traffic scenario at present as well as in the past. It is useful to investigate all these projects for reusability in view of RITS.
